A Belated Happy Nyan Nyan Nyan Day!

On February 22, Japan celebrates its annual Cat Day, also called Nyan Nyan Nyan Day for a rather cute reason: the Japanese word for the number 2 is ni, which, if you added a certain syllable, becomes the Japanese word for meow, which is nyan (think Nyan Cat!). Pixar’s always been able to bring out the feels while delivering good jokes and amazing animation. The stories their movies tell onscreen are entertaining for children and grown-ups alike, and if the buzz about Inside Out hasn’t already given us enough hints, Inside Out’s just as awesome as we all thought it would be since the preview was released.

I personally love Disgust, and my brother has a soft spot for Sadness, but there’s something to love about all the little voices helping us all get through life.

In Guertena’s gallery, Ib went up against artwork that pulled her in a creepy world, chased her around said creepy world, met an assortment of characters, and showed her that art can be a very dangerous—but intriguing—thing.

Not this museum though. Far from scary, this museum is full of exhibits that also pull you in—only in ways that let you live fantastic adventures and hilarious moments all in one building without the horror.

This magical, crazy place is Art in Island, a 3D art museum in Cubao that allows its visitors to interact with all of the art!

Step into the Art

When visiting, make sure you bring nice socks (you surrender your shoes before entering), a good camera, and a ton of imagination. It’s easy to be overwhelmed by all the artwork once you get inside.

Ideally, the best time to come so you can take it easy finding that perfect pose is on a weekday, but we came one Sunday morning and lucky us—we got to enjoy the art with fewer people than usual.

Most of the exhibits have examples for poses so you can get ideas for just the right pose or camera angle. There are also stickers on the floor that serve as guides for the best place to take photos from.

It can take a bit of a effort to pose yourself to look like you’re properly interacting with the murals, like taking care not to look at the walls and pretending to look at something ‘in front of you.’

After a while I stopped caring about how I looked while ‘expressing’ myself—and neither should you! Don’t worry about looking silly or downright stupid—no one will care how you look unless it was a pose they can use for inspiration!

Art in Island is all about unleashing your creativity and being one with the art.

Just kidding.

Explore new places

It’s like taking a trip around the world, and then some. How would you resist stepping into places like an underwater paradise—

An ‘above water’ paradi—I mean adventure—

An ancient Egyptian escapade—

A drive to what might’ve been the original Caesar’s palace—

A literal storybook world—

And lovely places like Venice or Rome.

The place just takes adventure to new heights I tell you.

I even visited hell. This guy was very accommodating, but he needs to put on weight.

In ways that would make Dante (the poet, not the half-breed badass) proud, I also got to see heaven.

Meet new friends

The characters you meet are fascinating on their own, too, and there were plenty to see!

Like the complete lack of dental cavities in this new friend–

A wildebeest who seems to love Coca Cola as much as I do–

I think I learned how to communicate with dragons perfectly, too.

I’m already a small person, I didn’t want this giant pointing it out.

I think this gorilla’s adoptive parents are happy he met a new friend, but I’m not so sure.

Who’s a good kitty? Who’s a good kitty?

Heck, I even met Santa Claus and told his reindeer I was a good girl this year. So far.

Totally good. Promise.

I mean, I may have visited hell—-

But my wings are totally clean.

It’s all in the mind—err, eye.

Apart from clever angles and scenic views, Art in Island offers optical illusions that make you anywhere from larger than life—

And all kinds of trippy!

How to make the most of your visit

Not gonna lie—getting the perfect pic with all these paintings can be really challenging, so don’t worry if you don’t get it right the first try. Every picture here was the result of multiple takes!

Imagine the scene as 3D

This may sound a little weird, but don’t just look at the paintings or the camera when you’re posing. Imagine yourself in whatever scene you’re in, and take note of how and where the objects you’re interacting with are located.

This makes the angles of your face cooperate with the illusion that you’re in a ‘real’ scene, and not just standing against a painting. It helps most especially when you’re ‘holding’ something, for example.

look at examples for ideas and plan ahead

Unless you planned things really well and visited Art in Island on a day when no one else is around, you’re going to be waiting a lot for a picture with some of the exhibits. You can take this time to look for posted guide photos that show great ideas and examples of how to pose.

These photos are usually on an ordinary wall near the exhibit you want to pose in.

Be the next Oscar winner and play with your face!

Wouldn’t it get boring if every picture you take is of you smiling—even when you’re about to be eaten by a giant anglerfish? Don’t be a smiley Bella Swan and keep the same face every time—play it up!

It’s a lot more interesting to show a whole range of what your face can do when reacting to different scenarios, so give that smile a break and practice looking terrified, sneaky, or maybe even downright evil.

Get your friends or family to act with you

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then it’s easy to say that a picture’s capable of telling a story. If you’re stuck without a good pose, try to think up a nice little story/scenario to go with your picture to get you in the mood and have you react accordingly to whatever’s happening in the exhibit.

What’s more, it makes it easier for a group to be consistent—and adds an excellent touch of variety to boot!

Inspiring work

At the end of the exhibits, a long wall proudly displays the many palettes that the museum’s artists used to paint all the beautiful murals within the building.

It’s an amazing sight to see, especially when they offer a reminder that talented people are responsible for handpainting all that art for 120 days.

Is it worth a second visit? You bet.

I’m definitely coming back! There were so many installations that I wasn’t able to fully enjoy. Art in Island is a perfect place to take epic pictures of yourself, your family, and your friends, and all you need is P500 pesos, a good imagination—and the confidence to keep a pose for 5 seconds!

Drawing for fun and drawing as a business are two different things. For one thing, one of them requires a different set of skills that don’t involve drawing.

I’ve been drawing for the cafe for a very long time, but there’s always something to learn along the way. These 9 habits are just things I picked up from different subscriptions and articles I read every day that aim to bring out the best in you–and they’re not just for professionals, either.They’re for anyone who wants to take their art seriously :O

I write them here as a reminder to myself of the things I know I’m doing wrong (kick all the bad habits!!) and to share them with anyone else facing the same struggles as an artist who wants to make a living off what they create.

Why RPG Maker horror games? See, I’m a big fan of cute, but I’m also a big fan of horror. Not just any horror, either—I am a huge fan of spine-tingling, suspense-building, lingeringly creepy horror. The kind of horror that makes you scared before you even see anything, that makes you jump at every little noise—that makes you question any flash of white, too fast to see properly—

Until you see something smiling at you under solid black eyes.

THAT’S the horror I love, and because we celebrate all things cute here at the Keybie Cafe’s humble blog, for this year’s Halloween I’m putting together a list of superbly created RPG Maker horror games that didn’t just blow me away with great art, atmosphere, music and stories—they also happened to creep the bejeesus out of me and my friends.

Even better, all these games are free to download!

There are also spoiler-free walkthroughs linked at the end of each game for your convenience, because I know how frustrating it can be to repeatedly die just because you can’t figure out what the hell to do :3

5. Alice Mare

In Alice Mare, you play as a young orphan boy named Allen who finds himself delving into dream worlds that get darker as you progress. You meet with the different children you live with throughout the game, and can get 7 endings total depending on the choices you make.

Though it’s described to be an adventure game with just a ‘teaspoon’ of horror, the whole game carries a sense of unease from the themes each of the children’s stories carries. Each child’s past is actually based on a different fairy tale and is beautifully illustrated with adorable pixel sprites, lovely, sketchy ‘cutscenes’, and captivating music.

If you love puzzles and riddles, this is just the game for you.

4. Akemi Tan

If I were basing how good the horror games are on this list purely on how scary they are, this game would be number 1. I found Akemi Tan the most recently while looking for new horror games to play, and was intrigued when the blog I found it in casually shared how this game left one of the mods’ nerves in tatters.

An RPGMaker game that scared the wits out of bonafide players? I had to try it out. I wasn’t disappointed. In fact, if I had to be honest—I haven’t even finished this game yet, mostly because I can only play this game at night after work and I don’t want to play it alone.

The story starts off simple enough: set in rural Japan, a young girl named Shimoda makes an offering of fruit to the Ou (translated as King) on behalf of her family. Because Shimoda is unsupervised, hungry, modern, and therefore not in any real position to fear punishment for breaking the strict rules of tradition—she takes one of the fruits.

She finds out how screwed things are—and frankly, she is—when she wakes up alone in her house later that night.

Just the title screen image and that unsettling ringing ‘music’ should be enough to give you a taste of what to expect. The drawn art in-game may not be the best out there but don’t come for the art. Come for the heart-attack-inducing scares.

3. Mad Father

Mad Father tells the tale of a young girl named Aya Drevis who makes it her mission to find her father, a dedicated scientist who was ‘unfortunately’ held prisoner by an unknown spirit.

As Aya, you wake up to find that your spacious house is filled with undead victims of your father’s extensive ‘work’, and now you have to make your way through levels of tormented souls and creepy dolls to save your father from an angry spirit—who may not be as evil as you think.

The dialogue consists of detailed art instead of pixel sprites, and voice acting to that lets you hear Aya either ponder in thought, gasp in terror, or scream while dying a horrible death. There are chase scenes to tickle your sense of panic, too!

**2. Witch’s House (Majo no Ie)**

Viola is lost in the forest, and to find a means to get through a solid wall of roses blocking the only way out, she enters the house of a witch. A normal-looking house with rich carpets, bright torches, flowers in vases, furniture that moves mysteriously on its own, and blood on walls and stone floors.

Think that escalated quickly? That’s what The Witch’s House is all about—just when you think you’re okay, you’re suddenly face to face with a huge, murderous teddy bear hell-bent on killing you. No, I’m not exaggerating. That’s also just one of the many, many, many ways this house can kill you.

The ambiance in this game is so well put together that I wasn’t able to continue after 3 minutes of playing alone in the dark. In terms of story, well. Let’s just say that in terms of horror, this game has it in spades.

Fummy, who created this game, also has a beautifully illustrated light novel that serves as a prequel to the game. It offers a detailed backstory to the witch, and meaning to several items references in the game.

1. Ib

Any list of RPG Maker horror games that doesn’t include Ib doesn’t deserve to be called complete. True story. Ib is a masterpiece that can show anyone how quality isn’t all just in graphics. It’s also the very first RPG Maker game I’ve ever played, and it’s why I got into playing RPG Maker horror games to begin with.

You play a little girl named Ib (pronounced ‘Eve’ ) who goes to an art gallery with her parents. While looking at the bizarre yet intriguing works of artist Weiss Guertena, she finds herself lost deep within a dark, eerie version of the gallery she’d just been exploring. Unfortunately, you and Ib will discover that art can be very dangerous outside the confines of its frame.

Ib holds a warm, fuzzy spot in my heart because of its haunting music, memorable story, and even more memorable characters. Guertena’s world is as beautiful as it is deadly and creepy, and after one playthrough (I played through all the endings and then some), I never saw an art gallery the same way again.

Many of you may have already played it, but kouri, Ib’s creator, has released a version with 3 new endings, and an extra dungeon. I can tell you it’s worth going back to Guertena’s gallery for!

While I stand by the reasons why I love these particular titles, all these are just my personal picks for personal reasons. I’m pretty sure there are more games out there (that I may or may not have played yet) that are awesome in their own right.

Types of Coffee

Brewed Coffee

Also called the drip brew or filtered coffee, it’s the most basic type of coffee. Water is poured over roasted, ground coffee to create the classic cup most of us love. Contrary to popular belief, the key to a good brew isn’t solely in the kind of coffee bean you use; the water that dictates the taste, if not the overall quality.

Espresso

Pronounced without an ‘x,’ this is a highly concentrated, richer, stronger kind of coffee brought about by the process of forcing steam through finely ground roasted coffee beans. Without espresso, the succeeding kinds of coffee would not have come into being.

Café Americano

Even if it says Americano outright, don’t be fooled by the name. It’s actually what Europeans call a watered-down espresso. Europeans, we see what you did there!

Cappuccino

Easily distinguishable by the milk foam on top, it has steamed milk and espresso at the bottom. It’s perfect for creating that white mustache. Too bad you can’t twirl the ends though, like a sir.

Latte

If Cappuccino has more milk foam, Latte has more steamed milk than milk foam and espresso. Café Latte is different from Café au Lait through. When you hear Latte, think coffee of Italian origins with espresso. Au Lait is French with a French-pressed drip coffee as its base.

Macchiato

It’s an espresso but with milk foam on top. There’s nothing like a milk foam to hide a darker, stronger character underneath it! Cat likes to call it the mysterious one.
